Yuqi Zhang, age 14, is currently a first honors freshman at Amity High School. She has studied piano since the age of 6 and became the student of Michelle Zingale at the Neighborhood Music School (NMS) last summer. She completed level 10 of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Canada in 2004 with high honors while studying with Dr. Cynthia Tormann, Assistant Professor of School of Music, Queens' University, Canada. Along with many awards from the Annual Kiwanis Music Festival in Canada, Yuqi has completed Harmony 3 of the RCM theory examinations. She also received the Kingston Symphony Association Volunteer Committee Piano Award in 2004. |
Upon arriving in the United States, she studied with Qi Liu for a year and was a finalist in the Renee B. Fisher Competition in 2005. Yuqi is very active in school and won the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendent's (CAPSS) Certificate of Excellence in 2005. She is an accomplished violinist in the school orchestra and played in the Southern Regional Music Festival in 2006. In school, she divides her time between her studies and numerous clubs like Junior Society of American (JSA) and the Global Warming Club, which she created with a friend. She is currently in a trio coached by Fiona Murray and Erika Schroth at the NMS. During her spare time, Yuqi likes to read, babysit and tutor math.
